I was recently contacted to sketch up a fully 3D model of a two story cottage. Provided with the base CAD file showing the floorplan layout, I quickly created the 3D shell and added some AEC content using AutoCAD Architecture. The program provides tool to make wall, window and door create a breeze. I then used the file link option in 3D Studio Max Design to link the model into the software. This allows me to make changes to the model that the owner might want in AutoCAD and then reload the file using the link option in 3DS Max to reflect the changes. This method doesn’t affect lighting or materials, so I don’t have to go back through the process of reassigning materials, etc.
Once in 3DS Max, I could start modeling more of the interior details as well as add a few trees to the exterior to give it a slightly more realistic look. I didn’t go above and beyond on this model as the client wasn’t interested in those details. I’m working on a new project and plan to do a full interior/exterior model and will post that once done also. The cottage turned out well for what the end results were supposed to be.
